Tower

"Tower" is an eleborate mess of 66 tracks for mables to run down, towering at 62inch's. It has taken over 4000 wooden popsicle sticks and around 6 months (on and off).

"Tower" has many elements within the structure including a loop, spirals, zigzag boards and a spinning wheel. All 66 tracks reduce into one single track at the very bottom where the balls collect.

Cube

Cube is a Marble Run, Rolling Ball sculpture. It is a contemporay "Toy" for all ages. Entwinded together are 18 tracks of various length and turns. This Factor effects the speed and noise of the ball tumbling down. All Balls start from the top and end in the holding pen at the bottom via a hidden gutter system in the base.

Made using a mix of found and appropriated materials such as vacuum tubing, melted vinyl records and conduit piping the sculpture is powered by a Technics 1210 turntable. An Archimedes Wheel carries ball bearings into the trays where they are randomly distributed to different instruments which have been fused with amplified music stands. Some of the stands have been processed with delay and reverb. The resulting interactions between the two creates unique compositions.

Sonic Marble Run

The Sonic Marble Run is a sound sculpture and installation by Bristol based sound artist Oliver Jon Pigott. The piece consists of two elements. Firstly, the marble run creates sounds by a marble rolling along textured runways and striking various things such strings, springs metal objects etc. These sound sources are then amplified and reproduced through an installation of various prepared speakers. The speakers are prepared in that they have been physically altered in some way to affect their sound. As the audience roll the marbles down the run the space is filled with an electro mechanical soundscape.

"Any sound we hear has a mechanical source be it a vibrating drum skin, a plucked string, a struck object or a large machine. Since electrification and the advent of sound recording sound sources have become further and further removed from the listener who is often only presented with the loudspeaker as a source."

A high-tech, 32 channel digital sound controller throws a pianola and a vast collection of recycled hi-fi speakers (icons of technological redundancy) into dynamic relationship in John Wynne’s new sonic sculpture.

The Soundtrap research residency at Beaconsfield has enabled Wynne to explore its architectural acoustics with precision. High-level audio tools have allowed the artist to experiment with the way in which computers can be used to, in effect, draw and sculpt with moving sound. The research leads to an immersive sound installation, exhibiting for six weeks.

“The Victorian technology of the player piano is a perfect fit for the surroundings of Beaconsfield, which was originally a Ragged School for deprived children. It will be used not in a musical way but visually as a sculptural element and sonically as a kind of tone generator to explore the remarkable acoustics of the space. Although precisely what the piece will look and sound like will only develop gradually over the residency, it will hover on the borders of sound and music, playing on the aura of the absent/redundant performer and on the personality and history of the gathered speakers.”

John Wynne’s spatial composition is informed by the everyday noises reaching the room from beyond its walls. These have become the basis for a set of synthetic sounds created within the gallery and then moved intelligently throughout the space via 32 sound channels outputting through more than 300 hi-fi speakers. The computer-generated experience is offset by the acoustic interventions of a modified player-piano, powered by a domestic vacuum cleaner and re-programmed with a new score encoded on its paper roll.

The combination of multi-channel technology, the resonance of a classic mechanical instrument, sculpture on a grand scale and Beaconsfield’s legendary acoustic, promises a rare sensory experience.

Soundtrap IV is a Beaconsfield Commission supported by the PRS Foundation and Arts and Humanities Research Council. The artist also wishes to thank his two assistants, Kimmo Modig and Antoine Bertin, the Research Department of London College of Communications, Rex Lawson of the Pianola Institute, Richmond Sound Design (Canada) and Veolia Environmental Services.

Deitch Projects is pleased to present, After the Reality 2, an exhibition curated by Tokyo gallerist Hiromi Yoshii, featuring work by Yosuke Bandai, Enlightenment, Daisuke Fukunaga, Ujino Muneteru, Yukiko Shibata, Akira Shimidu, Koichi Toya and Nobuyasu Sato. They are among the most intriguing new Japanese artists to have emerged after the generation of ‘Superflat’ – the Japanese post-modern art movement championed by Takashi Murakami. With the exception of the art collective Enlightenment, who are godfathers to the emerging generation, all of the artists are showing their work in New York for the first time.

The artists in the exhibition share an interest in addressing the way culture has changed since 9/11. After the Reality, was an idiom proposed by art critic Kentaro Ichihara to describe this new post-9/11 attitude. This is the second exhibition on this theme presented by Deitch Projects and curated by Yoshii. The first took place in July of 2006, and included such artists as Yoshitaka Azuma and Koichi Enomoto, who went on to achieve further international recognition.

Yokomono Installation

Yokomono - the Staalplaat Mono Erosive Surround Sound Installation.

Yokomono consists of 10 small car-shaped record players, a corresponding set of FM radios and two mixing desks. The cars, known as "vinyl killers," have been customised with wireless FM transmitters. As they spin around the vinyl, they transmit their signal to the FM radios tuned to a special Yokomono frequency. This transmission is then mixed, edited and manipulated in real-time by members of the Staalplaat Soundsystem.

Yokomono is a simple installation and may seem like nothing more than a DJ set featuring 10 turntables. But each link in the performance chain is subject to variation, adding chaos, randomness and risk. First off, the "vinyl killers" are monophonic and deliver very poor sound quality. Second, their large size makes it hard to select which track is playing, kind of like playing a turntable blindfolded. The real fun begins when you realise the "killers" are battery-powered and run at different speeds depending on the strength of their batteries. As the performance develops, the "killers" slowly die. Battery charge also affects FM transmission and transmitting 10 channels at the same time further disturbs the overall sound balance. A combination of these factors makes the entire installation hard to control, which contributes to Yokomono's uniqueness and charm.

For larger Yokomono installations, we hook the feed up to 200 radios. By arranging the radios into 10 groups, it becomes possible to explore the architectural dimensions of the performance space. Sometimes small radios are placed on a moving model train, which drives thru the space and allows us to create a kinetic visual and audible "map" of the Yokomono transmissions.
Yokomono has been performed in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Budapest, Montreal, Moscow, Nante and St. Petersburg. Each time it is presented in a different form to make best use of the location and performance space.

we still consider Yokomono as work in progress. Next step will be to add a wireless video component to the setup.

An electro-kinetic sound installation, Tape uses simple analogue playback to allow users an arena in which to play with self-recorded sound and explore the effects of playback and sound synthesis. Housed in a transparent acrylic panel, Tape allows its user not only to view the oft-hidden components needed to record sound, but also to manipulate them as they see fit. Using Tape’s continuous tape loop and assemblage of appropriated and hand built electro-mechanical analogue parts, the user can not only record and play sounds, but physically slide, twist and move these components within the panel to explore their roles and uses.

A Little Breathing Room 2007 At The Exploratorium

San Francisco based artist Bernie Lubell's wood sculptures are some of the most inspirational kinetic art pieces around. His latest, "A Little Breathing Room" (2007), connects a custom built wooden bicycle to a large wood blower that causes a latex wall to "breathe". The air also produces a tone in a 10' wood organ pipe. It also allows for a second person to effect the tone theough interacting with the latex sheet. Really nice example of a collaborative instrument that can double as a fitness machine.

Made of pine, latex, music wire, black rubber rope, copper, nylon line. It measured 12' x 45' x 10'. Riding a bike rotates a large wood blower at high speed causing a double latex wall to breathe rhythmically. The air flow also produces a tone in 10' wood organ pipe. A second participant may interact with the latex sheet riding the rhythmic breath and changing the organ tone.

Opened in late 2006, London's Kinetica Museum is pretty much masturbatory material for everyone who's been through the ominous metal SRL shop doors in the past 30 years (um, like me). I mean, it's not going to have kinetic sex toy sculptures or anything, but it's got all the makings of my dream museum nonetheless. Their new exhibition just opened on the 16th; they have a lovely collection of images from their past exhibits. And check this -- looking at the images, it seems that their opening was celebrated with a show by Chico MacMurtrie's Amorphous Robot Works, whom I worked with for a few months in SF, Berlin and Lisbon.
